THE FULL GUIDE
Ceramic & graphene coatings explained
Ceramic & graphene coatings explained
A ceramic coating is the most durable way to protect your paint and keep it looking freshly detailed. Here’s exactly what it is, what it does and what to expect.
-
What is it?
A liquid coating, based on silicon dioxide (SiO2), that we apply by hand to your car’s paint. It bonds with the factory clear coat and hardens into a thin, clear, glass-like layer. Unlike wax or sealant, which sit on top of the paint and wear off within weeks or months, a ceramic coating becomes part of the surface.
-
What does it do?
It adds a hard, slick layer of protection over your paint.
- Deep, wet-look gloss that lasts
- Water beads and rolls off, taking dirt with it
- Dirt, grime and brake dust stick less, so washing is faster
- Protects against UV fading and oxidation
- Resists bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap, giving you more time to remove them before they mark the paint
- High resistance to heat, acid, alkali and abrasion
-
How long does it last?
Typically 2 to 5 years or more. How long yours lasts depends on the coating chosen, how the paint was prepared, where the car is parked and how it’s washed. We’ll tell you the expected life and warranty of the coating we recommend before you book.
-
What it won't do
It’s a strong layer of protection, not a force field.
- It isn’t scratch-proof or chip-proof. For stone chips, add paint protection film (PPF)
- It won’t hide existing scratches or swirls. That’s why we correct the paint first
- You still need to wash your car, it’s just much easier
-
How we apply it
Whatever is on the paint gets sealed under the coating, so preparation is most of the job.
- Hand wash and full decontamination to remove bonded grime
- Paint correction to remove swirls and light scratches
- Panel wipe to remove polish oils so the coating bonds properly
- Coating applied by hand, panel by panel, in our sealed Truganina studio
- Cured and inspected under studio lights before handover
-
Looking after it
A little care keeps the coating performing for years.
- Keep it dry and don’t wash it for the first week while it cures
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo
- Avoid automatic brush car washes
- Regular maintenance hand washes keep the water beading strong
Which one is right for me?
Ceramic is proven, long-lasting protection and great value for most cars. Graphene suits owners who want the latest technology, especially for cars parked outdoors where water spots are a problem. For protection against stone chips, pair either one with paint protection film. Not sure? Call us on 0410 111 190 and we’ll recommend the right option for your car.
Graphene coatings are the newest step in paint protection. They build on ceramic technology, with a few extra benefits. We’re adding them to our range soon.
-
What is it?
A ceramic-based coating reinforced with graphene, a form of carbon just one atom thick, arranged in a strong honeycomb pattern. Like a ceramic coating, it’s applied by hand and bonds with your paint to form a hard, clear protective layer.
-
What does it do?
Everything a ceramic coating does, and it’s designed to go further in a few areas.
- Deep gloss and a very slick, smooth finish
- Strong water beading, and water slides off more easily
- Designed to reduce water spots, a common issue with cars parked outdoors
- Helps the surface shed heat, so it stays cleaner and cooler in the sun
- Protection against UV, bird droppings, bugs and tree sap
-
How long does it last?
Similar to a quality ceramic coating: typically several years, depending on the product, the paint preparation and how the car is looked after. We’ll confirm the expected life and warranty of the product we use when it launches.
-
What it won’t do
The same honest limits as ceramic.
- It isn’t scratch-proof or chip-proof. Pair it with PPF for stone chips
- It won’t hide existing scratches, so the paint is corrected first
- Your car still needs regular washing
-
How we apply it
The same careful process as our ceramic coatings.
- Hand wash and full decontamination
- Paint correction
- Panel wipe so the coating bonds properly
- Applied by hand in our sealed Truganina studio
- Cured and inspected before handover
-
Looking after it
The same simple routine as ceramic.
- Keep it dry and don’t wash it for the first week
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo
- Avoid automatic brush car washes
